In the 90s of 20th century, airport Sliač and other public Slovak airports has allocated from the ČSA airlines, which meant, that on 1st January 1991 airport became part of  newly subsidized Slovak Airport Association. In the same year airport Sliač received the status of public international airport. This situation persisted until year 2004. Under Law Act no. 136/2004 of 1st January 2005 has airport Sliač transformed to limited company whose 100% owner is Slovak Republic. The airport currently operates under the name Airport Sliač Ltd. and provides a civil aviation services. Airport was closed from May 2009, because there was carried out a reconstruction and renovation of the runway. These works have been completed and supported by NATO and lasted whole 2 years. Today we are pleased to inform the general public, that airport Sliač is re-opened for civil air traffic from 16th June of 2011.

International Airport Sliač, also known historically under the name from World War II as "Three Oaks", is located in ideal location in the territory of Central Slovakia, right in the middle between two metropolitan cities of this region, Zvolen and Banská Bystrica. Airport completes the complex of infrastructure in the central counties. History of airport dates back to the inter-war period and regular civil air traffic started to operate already in year 1947. In 1991 the airport met the conditions for granting the status of international airport. This significant milestone has allowed the direct connections with foreign countries and also increase whole dynamic development and growth. On the basis of technical and equipment-used parameters is airport classified, according to document of ICAO - ANNEX 14, in category 4D, which means, that airport can be used by almost all types of aircrafts in civil aviation industry. There is used for precision approaches navigation systems of ICAO I. category on the airport and allows operation at the airport in degraded weather conditions without sight of the surface and also at night.
